Pfc Harlan L. Herrscher attended Grover Cleveland High School in St. Louis. He grew up in Bevo Mill, south of St. Louis along with his parents, his aunt and uncle and their three boys.Pfc Herrscher was 18 when he enlisted at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on 22 June 1943.
A freak accident led to his death. A fellow soldier picked up a German Luger he found. It was booby-trapped, and Pfc Herrscher was its victim.
Pfc Harlan was initially buried in a temporary grave at Margraten on 19 April 1945. He was disinterred on 16 August 1948 and given his final resting place in January 1949.
