Pvt James R. Orr was a student at Ohio State University before,He enlisted on 6 March 1943 at Fort Hayes, Ohio.
On 25 January 1945, Pvt Orr had his left leg blown off. Despite the traumatic injury and intense pain, he continued to give aid to wounded soldiers until he passed out. He passed away six days later on 31 January 1945. For this action, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal posthumously.
