Pvt James Massing graduated fromf Woodrow Wilson High School in 1940. He was employed by the Beckley Floral Shop.

He enlisted in Huntington, West Virginia on 28 August 1942.

He participated with his unit in a raid on Niederhauser, Germany. His platoon was forced to withdraw to their base in Gillrath, Germany about 15 miles north of Aachen. He was seen just before the withdrawal and not seen afterwards. A search was made for him without success. According to a buddy he was killed instantly at night time, between midnight and morning.
