Sgt Elmer V. Mannisto completed four years of high school and was employed as a welder at Crompton & Knowles Loom Works.

He enlisted at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 13 October 1942. He was wounded by shell fragments in August, 1944 and returned to duty in September, 1944. For this Sgt Mannisto received the Purple Heart.
