More information

Capt Clark E. McGee graduated from Phoenix Union High School. During High School he was a member of the R.O.T.C. club, played football and baseball and was a pre-engineering student. Then he went to Phoenix Junior College and the University of Arizona.

He was married to Josephine P. Henry on 30 July 1939 in Florence, Pinal County, Arizona.

He entered the army upon his graduation from the university in 1942. He trained at Fort Benning, Georgia. He participated in the landing in North Africa

Before being commanding Officer of Company A, Clark E. McGee had been a platoon leader and executive officer of Company C.

On 2 September 1944 the mission of Company A was to seize important crossroads three miles northeast of Orchies. In the town of Orchies the company captured 480 prisoners and the 3rd platoon remained at Orchies to guard the prisoners and maintain order. The 1st and 2nd platoons outposted the crossroads. Capt McGee took the 1st platoon to the Belgian border and was returning to Orchies to see what the situation was and to move the remainder of the company forward. On the outskirts of Orchies his jeep was ambushed and Capt McGee, Cpl Wanne and Pfc Herbig were killed. During the ambush he was mortally wounded by a hand grenade. He fought off the attackers until he died from his wounds a few moments later.

He was awarded the Silver Star posthumously for these actions.

His brother Fitzhugh was a lieutenant in the Air Corps.

The first picture was taken in high school in 1934.
