2nd Lt James R. Dougherty Jr. gradudated from the University of Texas and was a lawyer.

He enlisted at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on 27 March 1941.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. The citation cited: For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 82d Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 7 October 1944. 2nd Lt Dougherty's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 2nd Armored Division, and the United States Army.'

Lt Dougherty is remembered at Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville, Bee County, Texas,
