Pvt Jackson J. James attened the Webb City High School in Webb City, Missouri. He enlisted in Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California on 13 February 1942. His mother died in 1918 and he and his sister went to live with their grandparents in Webb City, Missouri. His father was born in New York and his name was Merritt Beard Denson. His father was an actor and when he moved west he used the theater name Raymond J. James and Jimmie James."The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Jackson J. James (39019246), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 273rd Infantry Regiment, 69th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 5 April 1945. Private James' intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 69th Infantry Division, and the United States Army."
