S/Sgt John Haverly graduated from Plains Memorial High School in 1941 and had been employed by Remington Rand at Elmira, N.Y.

He enlisted in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on 19 March 1943 and was sent overseas in November 1944.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. The citation cited: In the course of a successfull attack, S/Sgt Haverly places his squad in position while under heavy small arms fire skillfuly posted his men for maximum effectiveness against the Germans. In an effort to locate enemy shipers, S/Sgt Haverly deliberately exposed himself. Attempting to draw enemy fire, he fell, mortally wounded, while still directing his efforts to the liquidation of the enemy."
