S/Sgt Edward D. Hockert enlisted on 9 July 1929.He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 9 July 1929 and re-enlisted in the Marine Corps again in August 1933, for another four-year period. He was honorably discharged in August 1937.
Three months after the United States became embrolled in World War II, he joined the United States Army, going into service on 14 March 1942.
Two of his brothers also served: Pfc Robert Hockert in the South Pacific and Cpl. Charles Hockert, who was stationed at Camp Livingston, Louisiana at that time.
