Martin Lucas worked as an automobile mechanic before he joined the Regular Army on 14 October 1940 in Springfield, Missouri. He was discharged but re-enlisted on 1 July 1942 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.His wife was pregnant with their son, Ted when he was shipped overseas. He joined his unit from a replacement depot on 9 October 1944.
He was killed on 18 November 1944, leaving a young widow and an expected son, who was born in February 1945, about 4 months after his father was killed.
