T/3 Charles H. Calland attended Glen-Nor High School and was employed in a floral nursery when he enlisted at Fort Knox on 6 June 1941. He trained at Camp Cooke, California. During this time, he met his future wife, Mildred, whom he married on 2 September 1942, in Arizona. T/3 Calland deployed overseas in February 1944.
