Sgt James L. Gregory grauated from Williams College and was an advertising agent.

He volunteered for the Army of the United States at Brooklyn Army Base, New York on 27 January 1942 and was sent overseas in July 1943.

He met Jean Maney while she was a student at the Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina and James Gregory was stationed at the nearby army base of Fort Croft. They married on 26 December 1943.

He was killed on his one year wedding anniversary by small arms fire in the abdomen.
