Pvt John M. Miller graduated from Boys High School and was a student at Emory University.

He enlisted at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia on 12 February 1943. He trained at Camp McCall, Mississippi. He then transferred to the Air Corps and received training at the University of Denver, Santa Ana, California and Phoenix, Arizona.

In July 1944 he was reassigned to the infantry at Fort Jackson, South Carolina after he went overseas in October 1944.
