Pvt Alvin Bains graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and was a saleman.

He originally volunteered for the Air Corps of the Army of the United States in New York City, New York on 14 December 1941. He was sent overseas in May 1943.

He saw action in all the campaigns of his regiment (Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium) and was wounded in action in Italy and in the Netherlands.
