T/Sgt Nicholas Mischissin graduated from Freeland High School with the class of 1936 where he was a basketball star. He was employed at the Essex-Sussec Hotel in Spring Lake, New Jersey and the Hotel Flamingo in Palm Beach, Florida.He enlisted at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania on 25 April 1941 and was sent overseas in October 1942.
He landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy on D-Day. He was promoted from S/Sgt to T/SGT on 1 July 1944 and was lightly wounded in action on 31 August 1944, while fighting near Brest but rejoined his outfit several weeks later.
Three brothers also served in the European area. George with the 88th Division in Italy; Michael with a military police company in France and John with a medical corps unit in the Netherlands.
