Pvt Donald Ranger graduated from North Plainfield High School, where he was a member of the football team. In 1941 he held an intercollegiate wrestling championship title.

He attended State Teachers College and enlisted during his third year on 15 July 1942 in Newark, New Jersey. He was first assigned to the artillery before he volunteered for the Rangers.

He was seriously wounded in action on 9 December 1944 at the west bank of the Rur River in Jülich, Germany. He died of his wounds in the 108th Evacuation Hospital in Terwinselen, the Neterlands.

He was first buried in a temporary grave at Margraten Cemetery on 10 December 1944 at 16.20 hrs. On 25 February 1949 he was given his final resting place.

His brother Alfred served with the Paratroopers.
