Pfc Herbert Brookes worked in a metal factory before he enlisted at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on 13 March 1942. He was sent overseas in January 1943.

He had previously been listed as missing in action in February 1943 but returned to duty in North Africa in March 1943. He was also hospitalized for a bout of malaria in an English hospital before returning to duty on D-Day.
