S/Sgt Monroe joined his unit on 27 June 1944 and got promoted to Sergeant on 27 August and to Staff Sergeant on 19 September 1944.S/Sgt Monroe was leading a combat patrol, sent out to capture three towns and mop up the enemy resistance. The patrol was caught under heavy machine gun and rifle fire and were forced to withdraw. S/Sgt Monroe never returned from this patrol.
