Pfc George C. Vernon graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1942. He was a student at the St. Mary's University when he joined the U.S. Army Reserve in San Antonio, Texas on 12 December 1942 under the Army Specialized Training Program. When this program was disbanded he was assigned to the infantry.

He applied for transfer to the paratroops three times but his application was turned down.

He was sent overseas in September 1944.
