His parents immigrated from Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira to the US.

Edward Rodrigues attended Pittsfield High School. He played ice hockey and football and hockey with the Pittsfield High Hockey team in the season 1940-1941. His ambition was to excel in all sports.

After finishing High School he enlisted on 25 March 1943 he enlisted in Springfield, Massachusetts. After basic training was at Camp Maxey, Texas, he was transferred to Ohio State University for a technical course. When the specialized training program was disbanded, he was transferred to the infantry. He was sent overseas in September1944.

On 3 March 1945 during the attack on the town of Krefeld, Edward Rodrigues was mortally wounded just outside the city and died the same day. On 5 March 1945, he was buried in a temporary grave at Margraten.
