Dayton Royall attended North Carolina State University for one year.

He enlisted at Camp Croft, South Carolina on 13 February 1943 and joined the A.S.T.P. Prorgam. When this program was disbanded, he was transferred to the infantry.

Both he and his army buddy Joseph Bowden Neely, Jr. married their brides on the same day, 21 August 1943.
