Oliver E. Mayo worked as a compositor or typesetter.He volunteered for the Army of the United States at Camp Forrest, Tennessee on 10 August 1942.
He joined his unit from a replacement depot on 14 June 1944 and was seriously wounded in action on 19 June 1944. He rejoined his unit on 18 October and was lightly wounded in action on 23 November. He again rejoined his unit on 30 March 1945.
