Pvt Thurman Johnson was employed at the Leonard Brothers store before he enlisted in September 1943.He joined his unit on 22 June 1944 and was lightly wounded on 29 June 1944 for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal a first time.
Pfc Johnson's brother, T/Sgt. C.E. Johnson, was killed in August 1944 as a crew member of the 780th Bomber Squadron based in Pantanella, Italy. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri.
