Pfc Joe W. Bailey was a chauffeur. He enlisted at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on 17 March 1944.

His squad was defending a roadblock when the enemy laid down a barrage on its position. The squad was ordered to withdraw. He was not present when the squad was reorganized.

Later determined that his remains had been recorvered by enemy and buried in a German Military Cemetery in Ittenbach.

Pfc Bailey's remains have been recovered and identified. PFC Bailey is interred at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas on 30 July 1963. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial.

He was declared officially dead one day and one year after he was reported missing in action.
