Biography
The following story is from the hand of a niece of Edwin Smergalski: "My father told me that his brother was in the Air Force which at the time was part of the Army. They needed soldiers to land on the beaches (I am not sure of the country.) They had the soldiers line up and count off by 2's (1, 2, 1, 2, etc.) My uncle was in the group that was sent - the other group stayed in England. My uncle was not familiar with the kind of weapon he had to use because he had been working in the Air Force and wasn't trained for the kind of battle he was in. I know that in some of the records I have it says where he died. I made a scrapbook for my dad and the letters are with him in Pennsylvania. When I go home in June, I will make a copy of those to send to you. I don't remember them being personal in nature."More information
