T/5 Clarence E. Haston Jr. graduated from Central High School in McMinnville, Tennessee and attended a Post Grad year at Castle Heights Military School in Lebanon, Tennessee. For two years prior to his entry into the service he was a Pred-Med student at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.He joined the U.S. Army Reserve in Knoxville, Tennessee on 5 August 1942.
He was awarded the Purple Heart in December for wounds received in action. His leg was injured by shrapnel from a German trench mortar, but after having his injuries treated he returned to active duty.
