Pvt Claudius H. Chappell was a State Highway Patrolman.

He enlisted on 11 February 1944 and trained at Camp Blanding, Florida. He was sent overseas on 7 August 1944.

He was wounded in action on 3 November 1944 in the vicinity of Winnerstraat, the Netherlands. He died of his wounds in the 48th Field Hospital that was operating in Kleine Brogel, Belgium.

On 10 November 1944 the first burials at the Temporary American Military Cemetery at Margraten took place. At 3:30 PM, Pvt Chappell was the third soldier that was buried on that day.

He is commemorated on a monument unveiled in Ospel, the Netherlands on 6 November 2019 in memory of the American soldiers who fell during the liberation of the town.

At the time of his death his brothers Robert and Edward served in the U.S. Navy.
