More information

Sgt James D. Baldwin was a stock clerk.

He enlisted in Roanoke, Viriginia on 5 January 1943.

Sgt Baldwin was initially buried in an isolated grave with a crude cross with two identification tags attached. This grave was in a field on the Overloonse Weg and the Hattertweg in Vierlingsbeek. From the appearance and crude fashion of the grave, it was thought it was erected by civilians. It was discovered by members of Company A of the 1257th Engineer Combat Battalion on 22 March 1945.

Sgt Baldwin was first buried at Margraten in a temporary grave on 14 July 1945. He was disinterred on 12 August 1948 and his remains were prepared and placed in a casket on 25 August 1948. He was given his final resting place on 22 December 1948.

His brother, Russell J. Baldwin, serve in the U.S. Navy and died in training. There were five brothers in military service during WWII: Wilson Clay and James Daniel in the Army, Russell Jacob and Randolph Baldwin in the U.S. Navy and Morris Winston in the U.S. Marines.
