Pfc John S. Willmert graduated from Winnebago High School in 1942 and attended the University of Washington for one year.

He enlisted in Tacoma, Washington on 24 February 1943 and was sent overseas in November 1944.

He is remembered at the Riverside Cemetery Winnebago in Faribault County, Minnesota.

Pfc Willmert was awarded the Bronze Star medal and the citation reads in part: "When his company was temporarily halted by enemy machinegun fire, Pvt Willmert voluntarily left his covered stion to crawl seventy-five yards over icy, snow covered terrain under enemy observation and fire upon the hostile position. He exposed himself boldly and continued to fire upon the enemy until mortally wounded by an enemy rifleman."

His cousin, Sgt Paul W. Roesler is buried at the Luxembourg American Cemetery.
