More information

Sgt John H. McCarten enlisted in Fort Snelling, Minnesota on 16 July 1943.

He attended 3 years of college and was a teacher before he enlisted.

The Bronze Star citation reads in part: "When an enemy rifleman had inflicted two casualties upon his attacking squad, Sergeant McCarten left his covered position, dashed boldly across open terrain exposed to the full view of the enemy and succeeded in killing the enemy rifleman with one well-aimed shot. This action enabled his squad to advance and resume the attack."

Sgt McCarten was killed later the same day while leading an assault on an enemy machine gun position.
