More information

Sgt Ivor W. Sponsler graduated from Gallatin High School in 1941.

He enlisted in Butte, Montana on 27 July 1942.

The Bronze Star citation reads in part: "When his company had been momentarily halted by withering enemy machine gun fire, Sergeant Sponsler voluntarily advanced 150 yards over frozen, snow-covered terrain under direct observation from the enemy and under heavy hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire to attempt to silence the hostile machine gun. While placing effective small arms fire upon the hostile position, he was fatally wounded by an enemy rifleman."
