"I, John C. Tompkins, was Bombardier-Navigator in Airplane #624 flying in #6 position of the formation, and observed the following. About 20 or 30 seconds after bombs away, I looked up and in front of our ship into the bomb bays of Lt. Darnall’s ship. The bomb Bays were full of fire. About that time my Co-Pilot Called Lt Darnall on the radio and told him that his ship was on fire. He peeled off and immediately the crew started to bail-out. I watched the ship all the way down. It exploded when it hit the ground. My radio-gunner saw all six chutes open."

T/Sgt Repeta bailed out and he have been shot in his parachute.
