Pfc John R. Kimball enlisted in Altoona, Pennsylvania on 10 November 1943.
He attended Cambria High School in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. He won a scholarschip to St. Francis College, Loretto, Pennsylvania., after writing an essay called "How I Want to Spend My Life." His essay spoke of his ambition to become a metallurgist. He studied science at St. Francis.
Pfc Kimball was killed when struck by shrapnel.
