More information

Pvt Lawrence H. Bishop was a chauffeur.

He enlisted in Rutland, Vermont on 21 December 1943 and was sent overseas on 29 April 1944.

His youngest sister Norine remembered her two older brothers, Norman and Lawrence, enjoyed playing baseball and fishing. Norman was known to have a temper at appropriate times and could get things done. He was also considered the extrovert. Lawrence, on the other hand, was mellower, easy going and introverted. Norine fondly remembered her two brothers as overall great individuals who worked hard and who loved their family.

As their mother ate Christmas dinner with her daughter Norine, her son, Kenneth, and a friend, she received notification of her son Norman’s death. A short time later, in the presence of Norine and Kenneth once again, Norabella received notification of Lawrence’s death. Norine Bishop Royer stated that her mother was absolutely devastated by her sons’ deaths and never really was the same again. Her spirit seemed to be broken. Norabella remained a widow and never really spoke about Norman or Lawrence. The family ultimately decided to have the two brothers permanently interred side by side at Henri-Chapelle in 1949.

He was wounded by a penetration wound in the chest and died the same day in an aid station.

His remains arrived at Henri-Chapelle on 26 December 1944 as Unknown X-252 but was identified by fingerprints, a physical description, laundry marks on his clothing and an identification bracelet. He was buried in a temporary grave at Henri-Chapelle the same day.

Pvt Bishop was disinterred on 22 October 1947 and his remains were prepared and placed in a casket on 29 October 1947. He was given his final resting place on 5 May 1949.

He is buried next to his brother, Sgt Norman E. Bishop.
