Pfc Ernest R. Newhook was a sailor before he enlisted in New York City, New York on 16 February 1943.The chaplain, Milton Berg, recalled what happened: "The mission of the company was to clear the woods in the vicinity of Rimbeck, Germany. He was coming over a field on his way back to the place where the platoon command post was located when a mortar shell landed near him. He was hit by fragments from this shell and was instantly killed."
