Pfc Richard M. Hylkema graduated from River Falls in 1934 in the three-year group and was a retail manager. He also attended Wisconsin State Teachers College.He enlisted in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 10 November 1942.
His parents were immigrants from the Netherlands and Pfc Hylkema was killed close to their birth place.
