More information

Cpl Alfonso Morrone enlisted in New York City, New York on 18 November 1942.
He was awarded the Soldier's Medal posthumously. The citation stated: For heroism in Germany on 22 January 1945 not involving actual conflict with the enemy. While in a place of comparative safety, Cpl. Morrone learned that high explosives which were stored in a nearby building had caught on fire. Remembering that four men of his squad were asleep in the building and fully realizing that an explosion was imminent, Cpl. Morrone rushed into the building in a valiant attempt to rescue his men. Before they were able to escape, the explosives detonated and buried Cpl. Morrone and his men. His unparalleled unselfishness and his regard for his men reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service.
