Pvt Raymond Shaffer enlisted on 25 January 1944 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He joined his unit from a replacement depot on 18 August 1944.

His wife was the widow of his brother, William, who fell against a circular saw while cutting wood at his Chapman Hollow home in 1928 and was killed instantly.
