Pfc Gordon W. Lillie had no family and resided at the St. Mary's Home (orphanage) since infancy. His goal was to be a farmer and for a period before he entered the army he was employed on farms in the Binghamton area.

He enlisted in Binghampton, New York on 26 November 1943. He joined his unit from a Replacement Depot on 24 July 1944.

He was lightly wounded in action on 12 August en rejoined his unit on 20 November 1944.

He was promoted to Private First Class on 7 February 1945. He was seriously wounded in action on 27 February 1945 in the vicinity of Güddenrath, Germany and died of his wounds on 4 March 1945.

In his last letter to St. Mary's Home, he wrote from Germany on 4 February 1945 that he hoped to come home and settle down on a farm.
