More information
S/Sgt. Fred H. Brown was co-owner of Star barber shop.He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously. The citation reads: For the extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy in Germany. On 10 April 1945, during an advance upon the town of Schwerstadt, Germany, Sgt Brown's company was pinned down by a withering gun fire emanating from concealed enemy positions. With utter disregard for his own safety, this gallant leader left cover and fearlessly charged the first machine gun emplacement firing form the hip as he ran. Although wounded he continues his gallant charge until mortally wounded by a second hostile machine gun. Sgt Brown's heroic, self-sacrificing actions enabled his company to locate and destroy the two enemy machine gun positions. His dauntless courage and supreme devotion to duty will live n as an inspiration to the men with whom he fought.
He was also awarded the Silver Star Medal for heroism during the fighting near the German town of Olk on 1 March 1945, when his squad leader was killed and his company was pinned down by the German fire.
