Pfc Ralph M. Hammond enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 20 November 1943 and trained at Camp Croft, South Carolina, Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and Fort Meade, Maryland. He was sent overseas in November 1944.The 2nd Platoon of B Company lost two tanks by enemy fire that day. Four men were killed. Three names are listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Ardennes Cemetery: Pfc Ralph M. Hammond, T/4 Arnold A. Pfaff and Sgt Daniel P. Liptrap. The platoon commander, 2nd Lt Lloyd M. Merrit is buried at Henri-Chapelle Cemetery.
