More information

Pvt Charles A. Strudeman graduated from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago and was a student at the University of Illinois when he enlisted in March 1942. He was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.) and studied at the Virginia Polytech Institute in Blackburg.

His fiancee received a letter from him written on Christmas in which he said he had attended mass and also that he had returned to the front after 48 hours leave in Paris.

A letter from a member of his platoon tells of the men being in the Ardennes Forest near Marche, Belgium. "On 26 December 1944 at 2:00 AM, we had taken heavy cannon fire from German tanks when Charles was injured. His injuries were so severe that he could not move or be moved. The cold was very extreme that night and my guess that he either died from the cold or the loss of blood."
