Thadeus S. Gondela attended Lawrence and Holyoke High School and worked in a paper factory.He volunteered for the Army of the United States in Springfield, Massachusetts on 4 March 1942 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, Camp Croft, South Carolina and Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
He served in the African campaign and in Sicily, where he was slightly wounded in action.
Thadeus Gondela was killed during the Waal River crossing.
His brother Stanley served with the Seabees and was stationed in Caledonia at time Thaddeus was killed.
