Pvt James R. Herman attended college for one year.He joined the Regular Army in Chicago, Illinois on 21 January 1941.
His twin brother Joseph served with the U.S. Navy and his brother Samuel was reported missing in action and is commemorated at the Walls of the Missing at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial of Epinal, France.
