S/Sgt Joseph A. Sparrow was a miner before he volunteered for the Army of the United States in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on 9 March 1942. He was sent overseas in May 1944.

He was killed by small arms fire to his chest.

He was first buried at the Temporary American Military Cemetery in Grand-Failly, France.
