T/5 Ernest O. Sheffield graduated from Oglethorpe University in 1941 with an AB degree in physical education and was an attendant at a filling station before he enlisted at Fort McPherson, Georgia on 28 December 1942. He was sent overseas in June 1944.He was taken prisoner on 24 December 1944 and was killed in an allied air raid on Bitburg, Germany the following day.
