More information

S/Sgt Louis Kos was a machinist before he joined the Regular Army in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 29 October 1941.

2nd Lt Edward L. Witty:
We were flying in No. 2 position of lead element, altitude 25,400 feet, time 1000 to 1010 hours. At this time we were hit from the rear at 5 o’clock level by approximately 25 enemy fighters. Aircraft B-17G, 44-6126, was leading No. 2 element. I glanced up and saw subject aircraft diving underneath us. When the aircraft had passed under us I saw that his No. 4 engine was on fire. At this time I observed one parachute leave the aircraft. I then lost sight of him as we turned in the opposite direction.

T/Sgt James I. Middleton:
I think Louis Kos died before the plane actually hit the ground.
