More information

F/O Frederick G. Farrarwas a mechanic and repairman before he joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in Buckley Field, Denver, Colorado, on 18 February 1943.

1st Lt Paul J. Murphy:
"On February 16, 1945, we were on a B-24 escort and strafing mission to Regensburg, Germany. At approximately 1314, we were letting down from 24,000 to strafe an airport. I noticed white smoke coming from the area between the right engine and cockpit of F/O Farrar's plane. I called him and informed him of the fact, and he replied that he was trying to get his right engine started again and that he had smoke in his cockpit. I then saw a flicker of flame come out from the outboard side of the right engine nacelle. I called and told him of this, and someone else told him to bail out. No answer was heard. The flame ran from the top of the right wing to the wing tip tank, which exploded, then the whole ship took fire. There were repeated calls for him to bail out, but no reply was heard. The ship then spun to the right, and when I last saw it, it went beneath my wing in an inverted position. His canopy was seen to come off, but no one saw a chute."
