S/Sgt Joe E. Cathey was employed at a hospital in Atlanta before he enlisted at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 21 October 1941.

He was sent overseas in August 1944.

His brother-in-law, Pfc Earl L. Blair, was killed on 3 April 1945 and is buried at Margraten Cemetery.
