Mexia Negro is killed in Jeep crash overseas.
Word has been received from the War Department by Mrs. Fannie E. Chatam, who resides in Mexia´s East colored addition, that her son, Private First Class J.C. Chatam, was killed in a traffic accident in Germany, August 6, 1945
The letter from the adjutant general reads;
The report of the investigvation conducted by the military authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding your son´s deat has now been received in the War Department. This report discloses that Private Chatam died instantly on the early morning of 6 August 1945, when the vehicle he was driving hit three trees. The Board of Officers investigating your son´s death ruled that it occured not in line of duty and was not due to his own misconduction.
Chatam was born November 27, 1919, attended Dunban school, and entered the army in September 1942. He had been overseas since the second week in August, 1944.
